Homemade Pico de Gallo is so much better than any salsa you could ever buy in the store.
Using just a few basic fresh ingredients, you can whip up this classic Mexican Pico de Gallo recipe in the time it takes to dice up a few ingredients.
One of the best things about making your own homemade Pico de Gallo recipe is that you can make it as spicy as you like by adjusting the amount of the ingredients. If you like it hot add another jalapeno. If you don’t care that much for a strong cilantro flavor decrease the amount of cilantro.
Since it is so close to Cino de Mayo, I decided it was time I shared some of my favorite Mexican recipes to make at home. This homemade Pico de Gallo recipe is perfect for topping off these delicious baked chicken taquitos or homemade tacos.
For this homemade Pico de Gallo Recipe, you’ll need:
8 roma tomatoes, diced
1/2 red onion, diced
1 jalapeno, seeded and finely chopped
2 TBSP lime juice
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
How to Make Pico de Gallo
Once you’ve chopped, diced and juiced all the ingredients, just add them to a bowl together and stir well. It’s that simple!
Using a hand juicer helps so much when juicing limes and lemons. It helps to keep the seeds out, get the most from your produce and keeps your hands clean! I make a lot of my own dressings so this hand juicer is used all the time in our house.
Tips for taking the seeds out of a jalapeno:
It’s simple to remove the seeds out of a jalapeno without ever having to touch or mess with those pesky seeds!
Place the jalapeno on a flat surface or cutting board. Lay your hand on top of the jalapeno and with enough pressure, roll the jalapeno back and forth under your palm.
You want enough pressure that you’ll hear the membranes begin to separate from the edge of the jalapeno. Once you no longer hear the membranes separating, slice the top off your jalapeno and you’ll be able to dump the seeds and insides right out.

I love making salsa and I make it the same way except I use the Vidalia sweet onions instead of red onions and I add green onions just because haha! I always liked the chunkier salsas so pico de Gallo salsa is definitely my fave! Fresh & Chunky!
I love green onions, I am so adding them next time I make this!
I have never tried these before and will love to make it. Delicious! Thank you for your recipe 🙂
I love salsa and glad to read about this post for all the necessary ingredient. I din’t know it is that simple. Tasted few times in restaurants in the states while traveling to California. We don’t have that much of salsa exposure in the place where I live – Singapore.
Oh yummy! I love Mexican food too and you can never skip on the salsa! I’ve never made my own before but it looks way better than any jar or packet one I have had, I will have to try this next time!
This looks incredible and delicious. I remember eating at that one Mexican-themed resto (Gringo is the name) and it completely blew me away with how scrumptious their food are. I’m going with your style and add more jalapenos for mine.
We always buy ours. Never gave much thought in making my own. Looks really good, I think I’ll try it on our next taco night!
I don’t frequently eat Mexican food, but I think I may like this sauce! It sounds like a great combo of freshness and spiciness!

I do love pico de gallo, it’s so good with tacos but also with any spicy mexican recipe. I don’t like coriander, so I would leave that out. I have made this recipe before though and it was such a great success in my family.
This looks really lovely. The salsa looks really gorgeous and the recipe looks really simple and easy to make. Thanks for sharing it.
Your pico looks so fresh! I especially like that it isn’t runny. I don’t always enjoy the mess that I get from Pico Di Gallo. This is a great recipe.
This is awesome, I love salsa. Love sounds like an understatement, lol. This is beautiful and seems really practical and doable. I am glad I came across this
I like the watery salsa best…I’m anti chunks! But my sister LOVES pico de gallo so I will have to share this one with her!!
